Businessman: my alternative to masterplan

A BUSINESSMAN is calling for residents and traders to attend a meeting about the future of Harwich.

Tony Woods, managing director of AJ Woods Engineering, in Parkeston, said he does not agree with the Harwich Masterplan and is in the process of drawing up an alternative proposal for the town.

He said: "The masterplan proposes 600 to 900 flats - all the regeneration in this area plans turning commercial land into flats.

"The whole of Harwich is in limbo waiting for the quay to be developed or for the masterplan.

"Harwich needs to improve now.

"We moan about the youths, but what do we do for them? What do we do for employment?

"I have started to write up a masterplan that would totally regenerate the town."

Mr Woods hopes to include plans for a commercial container port at Bathside alongside an historic marine area at Navyard Wharf and a walk from Parkeston Quay along the bay to Dovercourt High Street.

"The walk could have a bridge over the railway to Kingsway and Station Road.

"We need everyone to put their ideas into a big melting pot," he said.

"We are thinking about turning Harwich back into an epicentre of marine activity.

"I want to bring the history back to the port."

Anyone with ideas on how to improve Harwich, Dovercourt, and Parkeston is asked to attend the meeting to share their views on the current masterplan and put forward any new ideas for the area.

The meeting is set to be held at AJ Woods Engineering, Unit 1, Iconsfield Park, Parkeston on Thursday at 7pm.

It is hoped Essex county councillor Sarah Candy will be there to answer questions about the current masterplan.

Mr Woods said he was planning to take his fight to have the current masterplan overturned to the next full meeting of Tendring Council, on October 15.
