Mayor chooses charity
MEMBERS of the armed services and their families will benefit from funds raised by the mayor.
Mayor of Maldon David Denyer has chosen The Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) as his chosen charity for the year.
He, along with Mayoress Miriam Lewis, will be helping to promote awareness, raise money and encourage others to support the SSAFA.
He said he had chosen the charity because, with our armed forces currently engaged in conflicts from Iraq to Afghanistan, the SSAFA has had to deal with increasing challenges but its traditions of service and responsiveness are as strong as ever.
The charity was formed in 1885. In 1945 representatives flew to Japan to meet released British POWs with news and photographs of their loved ones.
And today the charity is still offering support to those fighting for their country and the family they leave at home.
Last year Mayor John Almond, with the support of the people of Maldon raised more than £4,000 including £1,500 for his chosen charity - the RNLI.
And Mr Denyer is confident that the people of Maldon will now help raise funds for another worthwhile cause.
Anyone who wants to find out more about the SSAFA can call the nearest office in Colchester on 01206 764114 or visit www.ssafa.org.uk

83 days!!! 83 days, that's how long this new mayor has taken to choose a charity!!
Why did it take so long, and on the assumption this mayor is in place for 365 days, that's a fair chunk of the fund raising time gone, especially as the announcement seems to have been made after Carnival week, where you'd suppose you'd get the best launch for something like this.
I'm flabbergasted by this, what does this role entail that it takes so long to make a simple decision?!
And another thing, (don't stop me I'm on a roll), £4000? Our small company raised £2500 for a local charity last year, and there is less that 100 of us, with the resources that you'd assume is available to a town mayor, why the pitifully small amount, our local school draw this kind of money from the PTA in 3 months, just a little more than 83 days!!!
Can anyone tell me if there is any pubic/council money spent on having a mayor please?

Yes, you do have to pay, as part of council taxes are given to the Mayor as an 'allowance'

'Allowance' ;-)
I'd wager the charities would be better off if someone cut out the middle man!
