Tighter control on alcohol needed
MORE police officers, more control of alcohol and less alcopops are needed to help tackle antisocial and drunken behaviour in the town.
That is according to Maldon Town Council who was asked what they thought about alcohol control in the town.
Following a scheme - between police and Maldon District Council - which has seen an alcohol control order created covering Promenade Park, Park Drive, Upper Mill Road, Church Street, North Street, St Mary's Lane and St Mary's Court, other organisations were asked what they think about the control zone and for any other ideas about how to reduce drunken and antisocial behaviour.
The zone has given police and park rangers more power to confiscate alcohol without banning it from those areas completely.
And Maldon Town Council support the zone. They also stated that more police officers were needed to tackle antisocial behaviour in the town and they "would like to see all strong alcholic drinks aimed at young people banned".
The original control zone for Promenade Park was created in February and then extended in June after young drinkers were just being moved on from one area of the town to another.
A Behave or Be Banned scheme has also just begun with licensees voluntarily joining up. The scheme means those banned from one pub in Maldon for unruly behaviour could also then see themselves banned from many more.

Why do so many people look at the police as the main answer to these problems. Ive been out a lot in Maldon and have often found a huge amount of officers to be out and about in the town on a friday and saturday night with cars patrolling up and down the high street while others are walking. We need to get back to basics as a community and put the Responsibility back on to parents and those who are old enough to know better. I dont want to see gangs of police walking around the town dealing with drunks i want them to be helping else where and spending their time solving and preventing more serious crimes. We want to be able to get to the stage where we have a couple of officers looking after the Town centre area, that is when we know we getting to the bottom of the drinking problems.
