Burnham pensioner has stolen handbag returned

A DELIGHTED pensioner has thanked a police officer who helped to retrieve her stolen handbag.

Eileen Jennings, 79, of Fernlea Road, Burnham, had her handbag stolen when she went shopping in Chelmsford on Wednesday July 23, but less than two weeks later she has had the bag and most of its contents returned to her.

She got in touch with the Standard to personally thank PC Dominique Savory of Chelmsford police who was "very nice, understanding and really put herself out".

Mrs Jennings travelled alone by bus to Chelmsford that day and only realised her bag was missing when she went to get her bus pass out for the journey home.

The bag was within a larger shopping bag which Mrs Jennings said she kept close to her the whole time.

After realising it was missing she was left with no cash or bus pass to get home but a good samaritan, who was visiting the county from New Zealand, gave her £10 to get home.

A spokesman for Essex Police said Mrs Jennings' bag was later found in a bin by a council worker who then handed it in to police.

Officers looked at CCTV to view the area around the bin and to see if anyone was caught on camera dumping the bag but nothing was found.

However, Mrs Jennings collected her bag from Chelmsford police station on Saturday August 2 - £40 cash had been removed but her credit cards, bus pass, house keys and other personal items were still inside.

She said: "I could not believe how good the police were about it.

"I didn't expect to get it back at all but I'm delighted I have."
