Positive weekend for Chelmsford CC
It was generally a positive weekend for Chelmsford Cricket Club.
However, there was an island of gloom on the main pitch at Chelmer Park with two embarrassing defeats. Elsewhere it was five wins out of five.
Good spin bowling from Kamran Ali and Rob Hayto - who claimed four wickets apiece - helped restrict Hornchurch to 179 in the first team fixture. A nervy chase was eventually settled by the ninth wicket pair, Jack Moss and Paul Jones doing captain's job, returning to the fray after visiting hospital.
The second team had a day to forget against bogey side Brentwood. Brentwood were slightly let off the hook as they scored 207, Raja (62) and Balroop (46) doing well. Ian Hare (4-30) and Nigel Bond (2-22) were the pick of the attack. No one in a strong batting line up played well, Degg (3-39) put the skids under the reply and then Boon had an amazing debut, claiming 6 for 9, Chelmsford all out for less than a hundred.
There was some revenge in the third team fixture with Ken Jones guiding Chelmsford to a two wicket win. Brentwood scored exactly 200, Boon hitting an unbeaten 74 and Surujbally 41. Imran Akhtar (3-56) was the most successful Chelmsford bowler. Chelmsford went about the chase the hard way as wickets fell whenever they were on top, both Paul Keaney and Tom Iliffe made 36. The ninth wicket pair Jones and Akhtar did enough to win the match.
Despite playing with ten men, the fourth team won at Southend. A terrific partnership between Guy Balmford (99) and Ian Turner (63) enabled Chelmsford to reach 241 for four. Five wickets for Tom Halsey and three for Umrish Pandya saw Southend bowled out for 150.
Tom Witham batted well for 74 as the fifths won at Shenfield. James Arnold contributed 38 to Chelmsford's 248 for seven. Joyner (68) led the resistance but no one could help him, with Omair Riasat (4-37) and Liam Keaney (2-10) effecting crucial breakthroughs. Chelmsford eventually closed out a victory by 104 runs.
The Chelmer Park horror show was continued by the Sunday first team. Having been 134 for six, Leigh on Sea recovered to make 257 for eight from their 40 overs. Knox (68) wreaked havoc in the closing stages. Gary Chidley's two for 23 was the only real bright spot in the field. Madder (4-27) and Wallace (3-34) did the damage with Chelmsford succumbing for 108, Craig Thompson's 23 was the best score by a Chelmsford player on the centre pitch all weekend.
It was pretty much plain sailing for the Sunday seconds at Great Burstead. Brome played well to score a century for the home side but no one else managed more than 7 in a score of 142. There were three wickets for Alistair Fergus and two each from Umrish Pandya and Andy Thurston. Darren Thompson (78*) and Sean Tilby (54*) knocked the runs off without loss.
