Striders’ Molyneux wins silver
 |
| Barry Plowman and Gary Joslin at Ongar |
Springfield Striders' men continued their domination of the local road racing scene with gold and silver team medals in the Essex 10km Championship held at High Ongar on Sunday. There were plenty of individual medals as well, as the white and yellow vests placed six runners in the top 14.
Crispian Bloomfield, of Billericay, won the race as expected, but was chased hard by Paul Molyneux who added another silver to his ever growing county medal collection. Paul Dobson claimed another gold in the over 40 section with an excellent fourth place finish and was joined in the winning team by Mark Crook who finished fifth.
Gary Chandler, who had just returned from a business trip to America, was close behind in sixth place with Kev Harris also making the top ten. Harris also claimed silver in the over 40 section. Mark Newton closed the team for a well deserved silver medal. Malcolm Savage rounded off the medal haul with silver in the over 60 section.
The race attracted a large field of over 350 runners and due to a blustery wind, some rain and the varied surface; it was not a fast course. However there were plenty of fine runs from the many other Striders taking part. Lindsay Broadbridge made a welcome return to the roads and was well placed as were Richard Taylor, Darren Sutton and Jon Baker.
Lucy Westcott and Sarah Colbert made a rare appearance on the road racing scene and led the ladies challenge. There were notable runs from Sarah Mapplebeck, Jo Gemmill, Jennifer Macaulay, Allison Cook, Liz Irvine and Jenny Barrett. Almost 40 Striders took part and no doubt many more will be at the next two 10km races at Felsted and Brentwood in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile the fell running squad travelled to Shropshire for one of the toughest five mile races in the country. The Callow fell race includes three huge climbs and descents as it circumnavigates Little Stretton. Malcolm Muir made the top ten but suffered on the slippery descents. It was a baptism of fire for Ian Brazier who was trying fell running for the first time. He was cheered in at the finish by his team mates and is looking forward to his next TA training weekend.
Roger Gooding was also on the fells last week in the Lake District. He completed the Glaramara race from the Borrowdale valley, in 63 minutes, having to negotiate a steep scramble just below the summit. He then moved on to the Reston Scar Scamper, a new race in the eastern lakes which also included lots of steep climbs and descents. Rob Jebb, the top international fell runner, fell and dislocated his shoulder on one of the descents, but Gooding safely finished the course.
The trail runners were in action at Rayne on Wednesday on a very fast and attractive course. Tracey Woodyard won the ladies event with ease and Andy Mason, Jamie Woodyard and Jason Praill were all highly placed.
