New signing can't wait for new season

CHELMSFORD City have completed their latest transfer coup with the capture of last season's Blue Square South championship-winning Lewes skipper Steve Robinson to boost the side's defensive options.

Robinson, 32, is a big, strong defender also capable of coming forward to join attacks. He arrives at Chelmsford with over 100 games under his belt at Lewes having departed following the major overhaul of players at the club, which is under new ownership.

The signing is Jeff King's fourth of the summer following the arrivals of Dave Rainford, Kevin James and Danny Webb, and head coach Glenn Pennyfather is delighted with how the squad is shaping up after the completion of three pre-season friendlies.

"We're gradually putting together the strength of squad we think we need to win the league," said Pennyfather. "There should be more to come as we're still working on a few things so it's a very exciting time at the club.

"He's exactly the kind of player we're looking for as he's been there and done it last season and is also a quality player. We're looking forward to seeing what he can do in a claret shirt."

The former Grays player also appeared for Edgware Town, Cheshunt, Islington St. Marys, Hayes and Greenwich Borough and is now ready for his new challenge at Melbourne.

"A few of my old team mates at Lewes got fixed up with clubs fairly quickly but I preferred to sit back and look around at which clubs had big ambitions," said Robinson. "I'm really impressed with the club so far and the team are a great bunch of lads, some of whom I've known from the local scene or by playing against them. Now we can't wait for the season to start!"

City will officially launch their brand new kit at a Supporters Open Meeting on Thursday 31 July at around 7:30pm from their Melbourne base.

Fans will have the opportunity to quiz manager Jeff King on the night, which will be preceded at 6:30pm by the club's official AGM for members only.
