Bowls: Writtle bow out at semi-final stage
On Saturday, 12 July the Writtle team of Ian Smith, Terry Arthur, Derek Cook and Mike Wakeling played in the county semi-finals of the men's fours against Grays Town at Essex County Bowling Club, Westcliff.
The two teams were rarely a shot apart throughout the game but on the 20th end Writtle were holding four shots only to have the Grays skip take shot with his last wood. This gave Grays a 16 to 15 advantage going into the last end. On the last end Writtle were holding one shot until once again the Grays skip secured shot with his last wood. Writtle's skip, Ian Smith, was unable to alter the score with his last wood and Grays came out winners 17 shots to 15.
While Writtle are disappointed at not getting through to the finals it remains a great achievement to get to the semi finals and to perform so well.
