Six celebrate as Chelmsford CC hit their stride
CHELMSFORD swept the board on Saturday with six wins from six matches.
A sloppy hour in the field from the first team against Horndon on the Hill didn't prove too costly with an emphatic seven-wicket victory.
A good partnership between the Prowting brothers, Nick (47) and Chris (66 not out) was the key element.
Good batting from Tom Iliffe (28*) and Stuart Everard (21no) steered the second team to a tense four-wicket win at Wanstead & Snaresbrook.
It had seemed plain sailing whilst Martin Daniels (78) was at the crease but his dismissal sparked a collapse. The home side had scored 200 for nine, Mohammed (53) the top scorer and Nigel Bond (4-60) the most successful bowler.
The closest game involved the third team with Imran Akhtar playing the hero in an eight-run win.
Paul Keaney (58) batted well but the middle order folded against Jennings (4-54). Akhtar (38) scored crucial runs to get the score up to 172. At the finish, there were more than a dozen overs still available.
The fourth team achieved a comfortable win over Benfleet. Jack Sterland (57) and Chai Pandya (84) set Chelmsford up but on a difficult pitch, they were restricted to 184 for eight. Benfleet were bowled out for 58 in reply.
Most comprehensive winners on the day were the fifth team.
Sean Tilby (65) played the anchor role in Chelmsford's 243 for five. More flamboyant contributions came from Francis Kyan (47) and Tom Witham (53).
Alex Shepherd ripped through Billericay, returning five for 5 as they were bowled out for just 16. Alex Bailey and Alistair Baldwin each picked up a brace.
Steve Pleasant (53) was top scorer in the sixth team's 198 for five against Harold Wood.
Liam Keaney and James Clifford also made solid contributions. Clifford then starred with the ball, taking four for seven and Omair Riasat backed that up with three for 12. Otherwise, a terrific catch by Colin Miller was the highlight as Harold Wood mustered only 56.
The Sunday seconds played an exciting match at Old Southendians which ended in a three-wicket defeat from the last ball.
Lee Cranmer made a sparkling 80 and Stephen Drain 41 but some careless batting elsewhere meant Chelmsford were bowled out inside their forty over allocation for 184. Those wasted overs proved costly.
During the week, Liam Keaney hit a maiden century playing in the under-13s at Herongate. Keaney (128no) and Miles Clark (95) both hit personal bests whilst sharing in a fantastic partnership of 244.
