Single goal separates visiting U's from City
Pre-season friendly
Chelmsford City 0 Colchester United 1
Steven Gillespie, United's recent record signing from Cheltenham Town, provided a glimpse of things to come for Geraint Williams' U's with a fine 31st-minute goal which was the only separator of two competitive sides at Melbourne.
Both Essex clubs gained valuable match fitness from the workout in front of more than a thousand supporters, with both managers also moving a step closer to finalising their squads ahead of the fast-approaching football season.
Johnnie Jackson almost opened the scoring for the visitors on 13 minutes, sending a testing drive towards Danny Gay's goal from distance which the goalkeeper had to push away to safety.
But United did break the deadlock just after the half-hour mark as Gillespie escaped the Clarets' defensive line to run through and execute a dainty lob of the advancing Gay which landed just the right side of the upright.
Chelmsford's threat was limited to a 36th-minute Aidan Collins foray forward which amounted to a toe-punted strike well over the bar while Gillespie had the ball in the net again at the other end shortly afterwards, only to see it ruled-out for offside.
After the interval Stuart Ainsley wasted no time in attempting to level the scores, spotting keeper Dean Gerken off his line two minutes beyond the interval and sending a well-struck 45-yarder at an empty goal which meant the United custodian had to speedily back-track to tip over.
One of Colchester's many substitutes, Akani Sunday Wasiu, made an impact during his half-hour cameo, and one of his pokes at goal was collected low by Gay on one knee. He later rifled the ball onto the bar from distance, to no avail.
Nine minutes from time Kemal Izzet registered an attempt from a similar distance outside the penalty area which whistled over and Anthony Wordsworth also tested Gay again with a decent shot on the turn, though this was never to be a game laden with goals and the single Gillespie strike ultimately settled the contest.
