Southend United at Melbourne for tonight's friendly
Chelmsford will hope it's third time lucky as the Clarets take on Steve Tilson's Coca-Cola League One outfit Southend United at Melbourne this evening, kick-off 7.45pm.
City missed-out on a victory against the Shrimpers on two occasions last year but both matches provided plenty of entertainment. Firstly, on Monday August 8 2007, Southend netted the odd goal in seven during a warm-up game at the Stadium when Tommy Black's double for the visitors was the most prominent divider between the sides in a scintillating evening's football in front of 1,387 supporters.
Black's second-half brace put United in front for the first time after the Clarets twice moved in front through Bertie Brayley's early stunner and a Kezie Ibe nudge, while Chelmsford's other effort came courtesy of substitute Jason Hallett.
Fielding a side mixed with first-teamers and reserve talents, Southend displayed their new central defenders at the time, Nicky Bailey and Gary Richards, with Bailey going-on to enjoy a particularly successful season in blue.
Certainly of more repute was the closely-contested FansFocus.Com Essex Senior Cup Final at Roots Hall on Tuesday April 1.
Zoltan Liptak's solitary first-half tap-in was the slender margin which etched United's name on the Cup but City, buoyed by their 1,624 representation in a 2,995 attendance, had plenty to celebrate as the pending Ryman League champions represented the club with pride.
Adults can gain terrace access to tonight's match at Chelmsford Sport and Athletics Centre for the reduced cost of £7, with concessions gaining admission for £2.
All home 2008/09 friendlies benefit from Kids for a Quid status, meaning under-16s accompanied by adults get in for just one pound.
