First-round success for Writtle BC

On Wednesday July 23, Writtle Bowling Club's men's A team played Chelmsford A team in the first round of the Atkinson Shield, a knock-out competition for teams in Division1 and 2 of the Chelmsford and District League.

Writtle, playing on their home ground, got off to a good start with skip Paul Brandis and his team of Mike Wakeling, Paul Essam and Les Pallant taking an early lead, which they maintained with some excellent bowling. On the 18th end it was 19-9.

On rink two, skip Mike Fell with John Robinson, Terry Arthur and John Jones were holding Chelmsford, but the away team fought hard and nudged ahead on the 14th end. On the 19th end, the score was Writtle 16 shots to Chelmsford's 17.

Skip Ian Smith, Peter Groves, Dave Franklin and David Spence were also on good form and took an early lead, very comfortably scoring 28 points to Chelmsford's 11 by the 19th end.

It was at this point Chelmsford decided that they could not win and took the decision to concede, so Writtle go through to the next round.
