Brayley lands another friendly winner for City
Pre-season friendly
Chelmsford City 1 Histon 0
Bertie Brayley's latest pre-season strike landed Jeff King's Chelmsford City team a further inspiring victory, his goal the only one of the match against the Blue Square Premier outfit at Melbourne.
Netting with his head to open the afternoon's account on 34 minutes, last season's top scorer sent another positive message to the management team a week before the competitive action begins, away at Hayes & Yeading United next Saturday.
Having revealed midweek that the likely squad number for the start of the 2008/09 season will be 21, King's head coach, Glenn Pennyfather, will have observed every individual remaining keen to make a late impression against opposition from a division higher. The single goal victory will have done the Clarets no harm.
Kevin James gave Stutes goalkeeper Danny Naisbett a brief moment of concern in the unlucky 13th minute as his low shot squirmed into the control of the visiting keeper, but not before the ball crept underneath him and almost over the goal line.
This was followed two minutes later by a Jon Keeling cross from the left which seemed destined to drift out of play until it struck the near post and had to be dealt with by the defence.
But it wasn't until 11 minutes before the interval that the deadlock was broken. A brilliant delivery was sent into the box from the right flank and Brayley rose majestically to direct the ball firmly into the back of the net.
Histon made three substitutions as they re-entered the field for the second half and the revised team could have levelled in the 47th minute when Nathaniel Percival was found unmarked at the far post before his decent header was beaten away by City custodian Danny Gay. They were also near to a 62nd-minute leveller as Damien Reeves hooked right-footed and narrowly over from distance.
At the other end, almost immediately, James mis-kicked his initial strike and the arriving Keeling followed-up by firing inches too high.
Former Chelmsford striker Jack Midson came closest to stealing a draw at the end for Histon, rolling one shot frustratingly across the goal's face, then sending and volley through a crowd of players, but the spoils were to belong to the ever-impressive Clarets on the day.
