Chelmsford City ready for Hayes and Yeading
CLARETS head coach Glenn Pennyfather believes Chelmsford City have a squad fit for the title ahead of this Saturday's first Blue Square South match at Hayes & Yeading United.
He said: revealing: "The players are now ready for the challenge so it's all about unleashing them!"
Having completed signings of the calibre of Dave Rainford and Chris Moore from Dagenham & Redbridge over the Summer, Glenn and manager Jeff King now have a team with championship-winning potential to select from.
And Pennyfather is delighted with how preparations for next season have progressed.
He said: "People are always enquiring about joining the club and we want the best team here that we can possibly have.
"We don't intend to rotate our side this season - we want the strongest team out on the pitch based on merit.
"The size of the squad means everyone needs to be at the top of their game to be included.
"There's a real competition for places and you can see in training how competitive the players are to show what they can do," he added.
Opening the campaign this weekend is a trip to West London to face Hayes, while Monday night heralds the start of the home season with the visit of Fisher Athletic for a 7:45pm kick-off at Melbourne. Pennyfather rates Fisher as one of the dark horses for promotion.
He said: "I think our main opposition for the title will obviously include AFC Wimbledon who have a large fan base like ourselves, Havant & Waterlooville who have signed a number of good players from previous champions Lewes and I also expect Bromley to be a strong side again."
City have made substantial progress over the pre-season schedule.
They started with 5-0 and 7-1 wins over Whitton United and Witham Town respectively and defeating higher ranked opponents in Wycombe Wanderers (2-1) and Histon (1-0) to add to their increasingly blossoming reputation.
Last Saturday Bertie Brayley's latest strike landed King's team their inspiring victory over Blue Square Premier Histon, his goal the only one of the match against at Melbourne.
Then, on Monday evening, the final warm-up game at Concord Rangers resulting in a 3-0 win. Chris Moore hammered his first goal for the club and Jason Hallett helped himself to a brace as an experimental City side prevailed at Thames Road by a comfortable margin. Every player took something from the game, whether it was valuable match minutes or the opportunity to remind the Management Team what they could do, and the excitement is building with the first competitive match coming-up.
l Two coaches are being operated for the Hayes game, and places can be booked by calling (07506) 873741. They will depart the Clubhouse at 11:45am and opposite the County Hotel at noon. £10 for adults, £6 for concessions. CHRIS EVANS
