Pigeon racing
Saturday June 5 saw Maldon & District Pigeon Club have their final old bird race of the season, from Thurso in northern Scotland.
Five members sent 55 birds, which were liberated late, at 11.20am, into a south-easterly wind.
No birds were recorded until Monday morning - one of Alex Chapman's at 7.42am and one of Dave Freeman's at 9.40am. These were the old two birds home in race time.
Saturday June 19 was the first young bird race, from Sleaford, Lincolnshire. Give members sent 132 birds, liberated at 8.30am.
The winning bird timed in the thunderstorm at 10.27am went to Ian Wallis and daughter, recording a velocity of 1,456 yards per minute. This is also provisionally first for Essex Central Federation as well.
Losses were heavy, with some fanciers having five or six birds missing. One Chelmsford fancier sent 59 birds and had only 21 back.
