Swifts unable to stave off U's attack
Heybridge Swifts 1
Colchester United 6
Heybridge Swifts started the 2008/09 season entertaining CocaCola League 1 side Colchester United.
A spectacular 25-yardgoal by Nathan Clarke after 16 minutesopened the scoring forthe Swifts, beating the U's first-team custodian Dean Gerken with a finelobbed shot.
Swifts' lead was short-lived, though, with the U's equalising some 60 seconds later, Scott Vernon beating the home keeper with a perfectly-placed header following a well-rehearsed corner kick.
The visitors took the lead on the half hour mark when U's trialist Wasiu evaded two challenges before tucking the ball away in the bottom left-hand corner. And Colchester scored a fortuitous third goal some two minutes later witha ball deflected off Swifts' Robbie King.
The second half began with an alternative U's XI taking the field, which included Mark Yeates and Jonnie Jackson.
United added a fourth goal when Clive Platt lobbed Olly Morris-Saunders with a well-taken effort. The fifth goal came courtesy of Mark Yeates, following an impressive build-upinvolving Lockwood and Quintyn, surging forward to set up Yeates, who side-footed home.
Yeates then added his second and Colchester United's sixth as a fine driven effort passed Swifts' replacement keeper Bowyer.
l Heybridge Swifts have agreed terms with former Ebbsfleet United midfielder Liam Coleman, who re-joins the club following a brief successful loan spell last season.
