Danbury Park sets a district sport record
 |
| Making history: the 2008 team from Danbury Park Primary School |
THE young athletes of Danbury Park Primary School recently won the Maldon District Primary Schools Sports for the seventh time in the past eight years - a first in the event's 73-year history.
Having become champions in the Millennium Sports of 2000, Danbury Park have since won every year it has been staged except 2005 - the 2004 meet was cancelled.
Danbury Park staff cannot put their finger on the reason their pupils perform so consistently, but suggest factors might include the school having a strong commitment to competitive sport, good coaching, a competitive ethos and willingness to give up free time among the children and support from parents.
Every child also has the opportunity to trial for the team.
The school's 2008 team continued Danbury Park's long tradition of success, with special note being made of the two Year 5 children who competed against Year 6 youngsters from other schools in the long-distance races - yet Nicola Ingles still came first and Edward Baldry second, a remarkable result.
The final result saw the team ten points clear of second-placed Collingwood and 38 points ahead of local rivals St Johns.
