Tillingham 2nds withstand heat to take match

Tillingham's 2nd XI game against Marconi was played at the Bacons Oval in Bradwell.

Tillingham were asked to field first and had to contend with the extreme heat throughout the 45 overs. The bowlers stuck to their task well and managed to keep the visitors to a total of 191 for 6.

The long boundaries meant a lot of chasing in the field. This It was to Tillingham's advantage, though, as a number of shots that looked to be fours were hauled up inside the line.

Dave Mason was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 34, although Nic Cooch conceded only 28 runs from 12 overs and also took a wicket.

Graham Raven always seems to do well at Bradwell and his 52, opening the batting, set Tillingham on their way. The middle order was boosted by the inclusion of Olly Mee and Jim Chapman, who both requested a home game in order to attend a presentation in memory of Tony Cowell (see later). Mee made 24 but it was Chapman (7 not out) who played the major innings, first in a 50-run partnership with Mee and then, after three wickets fell in quick succession, an unbroken stand of 72 with captain Jon Butterwick, who made 29. The winning runs came in the 39th over, with Tillingham five wickets down.

Tillingham moved into second place in Division One of the Warsop Stebbing Sunday League when they completed the double over Hatfield Peverel. Batting first in their home game, Tillingham made 182 for 6 AS Dave Cummins top-scored with an unbeaten 46, while most of the other batsmen contributed - George Parlour (23), Dan Shepherd (20), Jon Butterwick (19), Tom Ford (17) and Cameron Mitchell (21 no out).

In their reply, Hatfield Peverel were undone by the spin of Parlour who took 3 for 36. At 46 for 5, the game looked over but Hatfield clawed their way back until Ford returned to finish things off with 3 for 27.

Alyn Davies bowled well and was rewarded with figures of 2 for 13 from his six overs. Hatfield were all out for 152 still 30 runs short of their target.

At Billericay the Sunday 2nd XI played Great Burstead and made a useful score of 203, batting first. The hosts had a strong batting line-up though, and knocked off the runs for the loss of five wickets.

After the game at Bradwell on Saturday, Gerry and Susan De Grooth presented the club with a bench in memory of Tony Cowell, who died at their ground a year ago. The presentation was attended by Tony's family and friends and those cricketers that had been playing in the game.

After Gerry had made a short speech, Jim Chapman thanked him and his wife for their kind gesture. It has yet to be agreed where the bench should stand, with the general feeling being that it should be at the Bacons Oval.

The Saturday 1st XI entertain Hockley this week while the 2nd XI travel to Great Baddow. On Sunday, there are two games, one at home against Chelmsford Nomads and the other away at South Fambridge.

Net sessions for Colts continue this week - details from Richard Emerson on 01621 772717.
