Galleywood go down to confident Tillingham
Tillingham Cricket Club's winning run continued on Saturday when they overcame Galleywood at Slades Lane.
In the absence of Jim Chapman, Alex Warren took the captaincy and his team were pleased with his first act, winning the toss and batting. On a scorching hot afternoon the home side enjoyed little further success after they had taken an early wicket.
Justin Emerson, who was promoted to open the batting, scored 38 and shared a 76-run partnership with Rob Ashworth who then, with his best performance of the season, hit 120 not out. There was still time for Warren to get in on the act and he hit a rapid 73 as he and Ashworth put on 122 for the third wicket.
At the close of their innings Tillingham were pleased with their total of 272 for 5 but knew they could not underestimate the home side. The caution proved well-founded, as Galleywood made a solid start against Tillingham's opening bowlers, Tom Ford and Andy Mee.
These two gave little away but Galleywood looked capable of compiling a decent score and when the early wickets didn't come there was some concern in Tillingham's ranks.
However, once the breakthrough was made, Tillingham continued to take wickets at regular intervals and although the home side kept themselves in the game, batsmen went out just at the right times. Tillingham's fielding helped, Mee and Ford both taking excellent catches.
The home side's challenge petered out towards the end and they finished on 226 for 8. George Parlour took another three wickets while Ford had 2 for 37 and Mee 1 for 40.
